London, April 17.
A disastrous fire broke out in London last night. It originated in Rose street, which leads from Newmarket street to St. Paul's .Churchyard, and it spread with alarming rapidity before the progress of the flames could be arrested. Six buildings were completely destroyed, including the premises of Messrs C. £egan, Paul and Co.. and of Mr Kingsbury, the well known publisher. St. Paul's .Cathedral was illuminated in a brilliant manner by the fire. It is now subsiding.
A departure in the tactics of the Irish conspirators is reported. It is stated that as a system of employing dynamite to effect their purposes has proved unavailing, the leaders of the Irish League intend to abandon that policy. The report is regarded with suspicion.
The Government of Madagascar has consented to submit to the terms proposed by France, and definite amicable arrangements have been entered into. France will accordingly withdraw the war vessels which have .been employed in blockading the Madagascar ports.
