The Frozen Meat Export Trade.
A scheme is on foot in Auckland for the formation of a company to undertake the < export trade in frozen meat.' Information '"' regarding the company is given in -the,,following letter from Mr J. C. Firth* ' which was read at a meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon :—o; Gentlemen,—On behalf of the projected,";' company, I hare the honor to make ap* '. } pliaction to the Harbor Board for the ' lease of a portion of the land adjoining: < the. railway wharf;;as shown on.plan attached thereto, for the purpose of erect* )., ing large freezing works and stores fo* frozen meat, dairy produce, and general ~ merchandise., I hare further to request, j on behalf of the projected company, that ; the Board will proride additional wharf * accommodation for large direot steamers of: < 5000 tons, by extending the eastern tee on ;; the railway wharf, as shown on the plan attached: and erecting an import' shed thereon. Should 1 the application, be-'i granted on sucb terms as would justify .. the proposed company in proceeding with ', the enterprise, arrangements will be made for drawing surplus .sheep and cattle from . both the East and West Coasts, and for j freezing, and storing the same for .ship-'^ meat, and for'chilling and storing dairy c° products at the-depot, to be erected on. 1 the aforesaid portion of land, marked A ;) and outlined red in plan .attached, hereto.; Arrangements are projected for securing^ direct steam transport between the port ofei Auckland and London.' for regular and) rapid transmission of frozen meat, dairy, and other produce. I hare only to add' that, if these proposals are carried out, 1 a: most important step will hare been taken, towards making the port of Auckland a, great emporium of trade, by which it is' not too much to say, the publio will be ' greatly benefited.
