The Synod at the,, evening sitting was occupied with a warm debate on the" religious education question. The Bishop of Nelson denounced: the 1 Catholic schools as giving teaching subversive of both civil and religious liberty, in setting the head of their church and his commands, over the Queen and her^aws. Ultimately/a petition -'was adopted, prayiog (1) grants for denomination schools, (2) for the, right, of the clergy to enter schools, and give religious instructions to children of their own communion, and (3) for local option clause empowering: each committee to order specified portions of Scripture to be used at the option of each committee. The last clause was an amendment of Archdeacon Mules. The Synod adjourned at 11-20.
