Thames Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting took place last evening. Present—Crs McCullough (in the Chair), Speight, Carpenter, Veele, McGowan, and Mennie. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from Mrs Stone, Mary street, complaining that a neighbour kept pigs to the detriment .of health in the locality and asking the Council to cause the removal of the nuisance. Dr Payne reported that the nuisance had caused two cases of typhoid fever in the locality, and Cr Carpenter gave notice that he would move " that a by law be passed by the Council prohibiting or regulating the keeping of swine within the Borough." Mr F. Wood's application that his property should be filled in or compensation given to him on account of the Eolleston street footpath being raised, was not entertained. i Mr Ashby's communication relative to | the reduction of the rent of the Bella j street tramway was referred to the Works Committee with power to act, as were also an application from S. C. Macky regarding a crossing at the corner of Queen and Mary streets ; a letter from <T. Hataerton asking the Council to repair footpaths in Willoughby street; an application by L. Melhose for assistance in repairing water pipes in Davy street; a communication from J. McDermott asking the Council to carry out the unfinished work on the Waiotahi aqueduct at schedule rates ; a letter from 0. Judd requesting that a pool of stagnant water might be removed from Queen street near his premises; and an offer by Mr L. Ebrenfried to sell to the Council some property under a portion of the Wai tahi culvert. Mr GvMcCaul wrote offering to pay £5 as his share of the expense in laying pipes to his premises in Davy street.. The Council had demanded £IJ, but the applieaut for remission had laid the service himself. This.matter was refered to th*e Water Supply Committee. Vouchers for £7 17s lOd were received. A number of applications for remission of rates were received, but with one ex* ception were not entertained. The Inspector of Dangerous Goods was instructed to offer no obstacle to the restoration of the kerosene seized in consequence of the late prosecution against Mears and Co. The Works Committee were authorised to deal with matters of defective drainage reported by the Inspector of Nuisances. Accounts for the amount .of £320 were passed for payment. The Foreman nf Works reported that the following works have been completed during the past month.:— "The laying down of a new culvert across the Moanataiari Creek road, repairing the road where necessary, and also the small foot track leading to the Caledonian Spur ; erecting a dam and new flood gate at in* take on Beach road, also a new flood gate at end of Albert*street culvert; laying down asphalt in Owen^street between Mr Fletchers's and Mr Stewart's premises. A man has been constantly employed on the Tararu road repairing the road near the Fishing Rock, so that the road may be kept passable for carts, The drains and water-tables within the Borough have been swept and cleaned. Arrangements have been made for the breakage of a large quantity of road metal to be ready for winter use. The carts and horses have been kept busy during the month carting road metal; also mullock to fill i in Queen street from Cochrane to Pahau j street."
