The Sonth Australian farmers' delegates nave purchased 7000 acres in the Waikato. Farquhar Macrae, late headmaster of the Auckland College, and brother-in law of Justice Gillies, leaves for Dunedin to-day. He enters the office of Stewart and Denniston, and intends qualifying himself to pass as a barrister. The Mormon'faith is making headway among the Maoris in Cambridge, about SO natives having given in their adhesion to the creed. At present the converts are being looked after by a native, an excatechist of the Church of England. The Tauranga Guardian has ceased publication. The hearing of the charges against Mahuki and other natives concerned in the Te Uira outrage commenced at the Supreme Court to-day. On being challenged in the usual way Mahuki replied, "A man who has a lame leg cannot hold it up." He eventually gave a reply construed into a plea of not guilty. The other natives are very obstinate, and were with difficulty induced to plead. Mr Hursthouse was the first witness examined. Arrived : H.M.S. Diamond, from Weilington.
