A Singular and Fatal Accident.

Dunedin, This day. A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the deep stream section of the Otago Central Railway, Some men were at work removing a larpe mass of rock projecting over the river ; a blast had been fired at one o'clock and they were afterwards shifting the rock loosened by the shock. Whilst thus occupied a fragment upon which they stood suddenly gave way. Edward Joyce fell over 100 ft down into the river, and was drowned, whilst Wm. Williams, the foreman, slipped a great distance, and was found lying on the bank close to the water his right arm beini- broken in two places, two ribs fractured, his collarbone.dislocated, and he was further seriously cut about the face and body. A third man named Wright managed to get his finger into a cleft in the rock and hung so, 150 ft above the water, until a rope was thrown to him, and he was rescued. At the inquest held on the body of Joyce a verdict of " Accidental death was returned. The deceased leaves a very large family, and the other man who ia so seriously injured, is in similar'circumstances in this respect.
