The Lindon police are actively engaged j in following up the clue which they hare obtained with reference to the murderous assaults on Lady Dixie. So far, however, their efforts have led to no decisive results, and the affair is still enshrouded in mystery. The libel action, Chamberlain v. Boyd, which aroce through the blackballing of plaintiff by members of the Beform Club, was brought to an abrupt termination today. After hearing arguments in full, the Court allowed the defendant's demur* rer, which has previously been overruled by the Judge before whom the case was set down for hearing.
The traffic through the Suez Canal is still impeded, owing !o the stranding of tbe steamer. Teuionia.. It is uncertain when the obstruction will be removed.
A vacancy in il*e Eeoch, caused by the retirementof (at J. Phillimore, Judge of the Admiralty Probate Division, aud High Court of Justice, has been filled by tbe appointment of Mr Eutt, Q,C, to the vacant position.
A, deputation from charity organisation societies have waited upon Sir Cbas. Dilke, urging upon him the Becessity of recommending Government to vole a sura of money for the assistance of persons desirous of emigrating to the British colonies. It was pointed out that arrangements might be made by which the^e advances could be repaid on tbe immigrants becoming settled in their new homes.
Bontaux, the Chairman of the Union General Eociety, who at Prris, in December last, was senten. Ed to fiva years' imprisonment for obtaining subscriptions for the Society by means of false represeotation, has petitioned for a deduction from his term of imprisonment. The petition has been granted and his sentence reduced to two years' imprironment.
The Committee of the British Museum has recommend ~d the trustees to purchase the whole of the celebrated ancient pictures known as the Ashbrrton collection.
London, March 22. Serious disturbances have taken place amongst the soldiers of Mahdi, the false prophet of the Soudan, and it is probable that a portion of bin followers will, in consequence desert bis service 1. London, March 27. The Times this morning publishes a letter from Lord Fitzroy, in which he discusses the proposals recently made for the encouragement of immigration to British Colonies. The writer objects to any money being voted out of rates for the assistance of emigration, but thinks that the various colonies should pass emigration votes. The colonies, however, should impose two conditions, viz.—that immigrants should pay a proportion of their own passage money, and that only those should ba assisted who possess vigorous health, and are fifed for actual manual labor. The latter condition, he is of opinion, should be rigidly enforced. Dale, M.A., a prominent minister of the Congregation Church, and an eminent writer on theological subjects, has been nominated as rector of the Glasgow University as a successor to Mr Bright. The Spanish Government have resolved to strengthen their garrisons, and add several new men-of war to their fleet.
Several additional explosions of gunpowder have taken place in Rome, and the greatest uneasiness prevails in -tfcat city.
