The barquentine Malay, bound from Newcastle, N.S.W. for Honolulu with 1,100 tons of coal aboard, put in here yesterday afternoon in a leaky condition. Captain Petersen reports having left Newcastle on the 21st February. On the 18th March, when the .vessel was in latitude 3315 south, longitude 17513 west, it began to blow from the S.E., and the gale quickly increased to a fierce hurricane. The vessel was then under balanced reefed mainsail, lower topsail,, fore-topsail and staysail. At 3.30 a.m. the vessel was struck on her starboard bow by a heavy sea, which carried away the boats forward, the house, and everything on deck. The sea took the second mate and one of the men overboard, and they were never seen again. The cabin and every state-room were flooded; the cargo shifted to the port; side, and the vessel was on her beam ends. She was also found to be making water, and men were in consequence lashed to the pumps for seven hours. The gale abating, the vessel managed to make Auckland.

Arrived: Mission schooner Southern Cross from Norfolk Island. Bishop Selwyn is a passenger.
