SUMMARY GOLD RETURNS.
Wb believe we are justified in saying that the late visit of the Chief Inspecting Engineer of Mines (Mr Gordon), in regard to aid to goldfields roids, will not prove unproductive to this district from the favorable impression which has evidently been made on him by the representatives of our " local governing bodies " during their perigrinatipns with the gentlemen referred to. Mr Gordon, as maty of our readers are aware, comes from " north of the tweed," and invariably practices that characteristic of his countrymen—caution, taking everything that he hears cum grano sails, and, like Thomas of old, can only be satisfied by probing and looking for himself; After a most searching inquiry, we understand our visitor has cordially approved of the request of the bodies before mentioned, and will make representations to the 'Minister of Mines, in whose hands the finality of the matter lies, accordingly; so that in a few days we may expect authority for the prosecution of most important works in connection with this goldfield.
. Application was made lately, by Mr W. Rowe for a lease of the 30 men's ground, bounded on the west by the Kuranui Hill, on the south-west by the Moanatairi, and on all other sides by supposed unoccupied ground. For the purpose of prospecting the ground, 50 shares have been issued, 6 of which are retained by the promoters, and 44 will be offered to the public at £5 each. It is proposed that a company be hereafter formed, if circumstances warrant. The firßt work intended to be carried out is the thorough testing of the ground at the back of the main slide in this locality. For this purpose it is intended to sink a shufc about 40 feet from the slide itself to a depth of about 60 feet, then crosscut so aa to intersect all the reefs and leaders so successfully worked on its seaward side in the Kurunui, Deep Lead, Homeward Bound, and Moanatairi. It is thought that this can be done at a comparatively email cost, as the ground in the vicjnity of the slide is likely to be of a favorable character. A large number of the shares have been already placed, and the Brokers' Association have agreed to place the remainder on the market. Operations will probably be commenced in a few days. The amount raised, after th« license has been paid for, will be about £180; which should be sufficient to do a large amount of prospecting.
