DUNEDIN.

Yesterday. The Daily Times of this morning has the following :—"A few days ago a telegram was published stating that Mr Montgomery, the leader of the Opposition, intended to reply to the Hon. Major Atkinson's address to Christcharch citizens. We believe it was arranged that Mr Montgomery, and also Mr John Holmes (one of the Christchurch members), should speak at the close of Major Atkinson's first address. This arrangement, however, was made under the wrong impression that the Col. Treasurer intended to discourse on party politics and we suppose the reason why the redoubtable leader of the Opposition did not carry out his programme was that the orations he had prepared would hardly fit in as a reply to the strictly nonpartisan address delivered by Major Atkinson." Mr Montgomery-intends to address his constituents at Akaroa on Wednesday next.

A. strong south-west gale has been blowing all day.

This day. An absurd rumor got abroad here today that the Rotomahana had gone ashore at the Bluff. The fact is, however, the Company here telegraphed to Captain Carey that he need not sail to day in the face of the gale.

One hundred old identities who arrived here by the first ship had a social gathering last night.

The weather continues miserable, put ting a stop to all outdoor sports.
