The Late Tidal Flood.

The Borough Council held a special meeting last evening, for the purpose of considering the best method of preventing damage in the Borough by the tidal floods. In the absence of His Worship the Mayor, Cr Carpteriter filled the Chair. There were also present—Crs Wilson, Veale, McGowan, Osborne, Mennie, and Bawden. Messrs Frater, Marshall, Mol hose, Browne, Vaughan, Curtis, and Gellion also attended as a deputation from a public meeting held a few evenings ago on the same subject.r-Mr Frater expressed the. views ..of those with him, and ventured an opinion that the Council should place a dam and flood-gate at the mouth of the Albert street intake. He asked the Council to take some measures to prevent damage being again done by the tide rising;'*—Upon the Chairman assuring those present that the Council would carefully ; consider their complaint, and take the most advisable steps they could to remove the cause of their grievance, the deputation withdrew. —Or Osborne moved, " That the Fore-, man of Works be instructed to erect a dam at the foot of Cocbrane street, .the top of it to be on a level with the top of the reclamation works—with a strong iron flood-gate ; also to put a flood-gate at.,the outlet of the Albert street culvert;" and said that no engineering difficulties presented themselves. ' The dani had been erected before by private sub* scription, but had been taken down by order of the Borough.—Cr Veale seconded the motion.—Upon the Foreman of Works being asked his opinion of Cr Osborne's proposal, he said he thought it would be the best plan to be adopted for the pur» pose of keeping the water out of the intake. He said the Cochrane street water-channel being backed up by the tide flowed down Davy street and helped to cause the flood, in Albert street. If they should determine to erect the dam it ought to be so constructed as to retain the channel waters in the intake until the tides should recede.—Cr McGowan thought the matter should be referred to the Works Committee.—The Town Clerk said the work proposed would be on Government land, and the owners would object to anything being done to it.— After a very animated discussion, in which every Councillor took part* it was resolved, by the casting vote of the Chairman, on the motion of Cr McGowan, "That the Works Committee have authority to take such measures as it may deem desirable to prevent the flooding of Albert and Davy streets in the future."
