A distribution of prizes in connection with the late meeting of the Rifle Association took place on Thursday. The Governor ■ occupied the chair. Colonel Hutton announced that the Volunteers would hold an encampment at Queenscliff at Easter. His Excellency in his speech dwelt on the desirability of the youths of the colony being trained shots. The funeral of the late Bishop of Balla* rat took place on the 16tb, and was attended by all the Roman Catholic clergy in the colony. A number of Protestant clergy were also present. "^ * On Saturday night James Moore, brother of the well-known actress, Maggie Moore,. assaulted Mr Alfred Moule, musician, and musical critic of the Age, the reason being an unfavourable article in Friday's Age regarding the performance of Maggie Moore in "La Mascotte." Moore was brought up at the Court to- -''. day, but the case was adjourned for s week, as Mr Moule was unable to, appear. .. In consequence of the. criticism -Miss Moore has withdrawn from the . stage character, which, is now played excellently by Miss Nellie Stewart.
Elizabeth Taylor was acquitted at the Central Criminal Court on the charge of causing the death of Mrs Robertson by unlawful practices. A case is proceeding of murder against - an aged man, 84, named Michael Leonard, who is charged with shooting Harry Denton, at Oakleigh, at Christmas. The crime is stated to have been due to prisoner's jealousy of his wife, who is 60 years of age. Sydney, February 21. ■ H. A. Handowßky, commission agent, shot himself in the Domain on Friday. Mr Rignold is playing Henry V. to good houses.
