Arrived: Barque Lei iereive, Captain Marley, 94 days from Liverpool. The third mate, Dumfrey, died during the passage. Experienced a heavy gale on the 17th February off Tasmania. The deck was flooded and the cabins gutted.
The City Council have accepted the tender for a lock hospital for £95.
Thomas Kennedy, lately in the employ of the Thames County, -was appointed City draughtsman at a salary of £175. He was strongly recommended by the City Engineer, and rereived 13 votes out of 17.
A swimming match between Hedley, of Christchurohy and Joiner, of Auckland, five miles, stakes £30 a side, and which was to come off on Saturday first, has fallen through owing to Hedley not haVing the stake moaey. Joiner now intends to claim the deposit £6. He (as a trial) swam (Yon! Freeman's Bay Point to Birkenhead Wharf ard back again the other day in aa hour and twenty minutes.
Daring yesterday Messrs Eolleslon and Btyce were engaged in departmental work and receiving deputations. Mr Eolleston had a long conference with Mr Percy Smith, the Assit. Surveyor* General, and Mr Tole, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, with regard to opening up certain blocks of land in the north, and setting apart knd for special purposes. Ministers will remain in Auckland several days. Their fature movements are not yet determined upon.
