Thames Borough Council.
The usual mreeting pif the Council was held ia the Borough Chambers last evening. Present—Crs McGowan (ia the chair), Osborne, Veale, Mennie, Bawden, Speight, and Wilsoa.
A telegram iras received from Cr MeCullough, pleading illness as the cause of his non-attendance. —Messrs Thompson and Sinclair wrote applying for the use of a portion of the footp; th in front of the Bank ot New Zealand for building purposes. The application was referred (o Works Committee with power act. —W. Mahoney asked for ai adjustment of his | rates in connection.wii'h the Lady Bowen Hotel aod adjoining premises. The matter was referred to the Water Supply Committee. —James Stewart's application that fooipat-i in front of his"premises in Owen 1 street be asphalted was referred to the Works Committee-to report upon.—The Rev. W. Calder wrote suggesting that the Council assist Mrs Hill and tamily to- get to Sydney. The cost would be £6. The letter was referred to the Charitable Aid Committee.—Mr J. O. Woolner asked the Council to build steps to his residence on the road to Irishtown, which was unapproachable owing to the County having cut away the bank in front of hia premises. Tile matter was referred to the Works Committee.—Mr A. West requested that the water supply might be cut pif bis engine, and Mr R. Bateman asked that his water rate might be reduced from £5 to £2 10s per annum. Bjth the above letters were referred to the Water Supply Committee. Mrs O'Brien informed the Council that she would not require the water laid on, as she had previously applied for. L. Ehrenfried informed the Council that he would prevent the brewery draining into Sealey street. A communication was received from the Education Board to the effect that they had placed £42 19s Id to the credit of the public library. The Borough Council of Waimate, Canterbury, asked assistance/ in having clause 350 of the old Act re inserted in the Municipal Corporations Act, which enabled Municipal Corporations to hold endowments apt exceeding 100 acres within their own boundaries.—The matter was left tojfab lown Clerk to deal with-. tramway proposed to be made ia Albert itreet, the Council resolved to lend the true us they hare, on the condition that they be returned on demand in the' same repair as they are now. The Town Clerk said he had wired to the Public Wotks Department asking whether the contraetrfor the Kaaaeranga section of the Thames Railway had been accepted, and he was informed by telegram that " it was not customary to give information until llie matter was arranged." , ■ v _ 'ST. .CfEOBGE's HAIL. The report of the Committee appointed to examine the deeds in connection with « the purchase of St. George's Hall was next considered. A call of. the whole Council having been made for the purpose, it was reported that the Mayor aod.Cra McCuHourq and Carpen'er were atyent. It was explaiurd that the Mayor was in Auckland in connection with the business of the Council, aud Cr MeCulloujjh's apology for non-attendance; rhich was telegraphed, was accepted. Cr Bawden apologised for the absence of Cr Carpenter, who it was stated had gone* to Mercury Bay, and was probably detained by stress of weather. There were no penalties inflicted. "n The report, which was read, ran as follows:—"The Committee have examined the dead of mortgage of the St. George's Hall nod nice allo ments surrounding s^me submitted to the Couaej^for signature, and referred by the t'oiirail to yoor Committee for execution, if approved., The Committee find that both the mort* gage deed audderdof conveyance contain a clause reserving all minerals in the ground to Mr R. Graham, tnd further, .that it is stipulated that an assurance agahst fire to the extent of £570 sha'l be maintained on the H?ll in favor of Mr Ehrenfried until the mortgage is paid off. The Coinmiti.ee, finding these clauses in the,deeds, have not executed the mortgage, and make the following recommendation to Council: That Mr Miller, on behalf of Mr Ehrenf.ied, be notified that the Council will accept the deed of con" yeyance, and execute the deed of mortgags, on the following conditions: That the freehold is absolute apd -not subject to any reservations as to minerals; that the insurance clause is omitted in the mortgage deed ; that the rents are es stated in Mr Ebrepi'ried's letier.—W. Feaseb, Mayor."—Carried. ) Cr Me jnie referred to the ruling of the Chairman at a previous meeting and asked if the attendance then was larger than on the previous occasion. The Chairman ruled that a call of the Council haying been mpde for the purpose of considering the report, the meeting should now deal with it. On the moiion of Cr Speight, seconded by Cr Wilson, the report was adopted without discussion. ; On the motion of Cr Mennie it was resolved to instruct the Foreman of 'Works to blive Queen street from Mary to Cochrar?e streets formed. ! Cr Yeale moved, and it was carried, that the fooipafh in Grey street from Butt's corner to the Hape Creek, be* formed. - .r _
Gc Eawden called the attention of the Council to the Moanafairi Creek road and the' Caledonian Hill, which it had been decided to rep::r, but (he wovk had not " brjn dope. The matter was left to the Works Committee with power to act.
