The principal astronomical event of this vetr is a total eclipse of-the sun, which takes place on the 7th of May. At some points on the central line the totality lasts nearly six minutes; bat so forgetful is the eclipse of the convenience of astronomers, ,ays the Athen.um, that this line, the whole of which ia included in the South Pacific Ocean, only touches land on a small island situated north of the bociety and west of the Marquesas Group. Th« commerce of Australasia is now waster than that of the United Kingdom at the accession of Queen Victoria.
