A vacancy having occurred in the representation of Haddingtonshire in the House of Commons, owing to the succession of Lord Eloho to the Earldom of Wemyss, on the death of the late Earl, an election took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Lord Elcho, eldest son of the present Earl by a large majority over- his opponent, the Conservative candidate. , . ■ E. M. Healey, M.P. for Wexford, has resigned his seat in the House of Commons. Cape IWk, February 6, Tbe House of Assembly bas passed a resolution approving of the withdrawing of tbe Cape Government from Basuto Land, but demanding that details should be presented to the House of the proposed settlement iv future of that territory. ;:'■, St. Petkbsbubg, February 6. The four men who were recently ar rested on n charge of complicity in the Phoenix Park murders were again brought up yesterday at the Dublin Police Court. The evidence was given connecting the prisoners with the murder of an informer who was killed. After an extensive discovery of arms had been made by the police, the case was further remanded. Bombay, February 6. Intelligence is to hand from Joonaghaur, in Baroda territory, of a "serious affray between the police and a number of mal content Ryots,.or native peasants. A body of two hundred of the latter were attacked j by a large force of armed native police, j and seventy Ryots were killed. [Specials to the Pbess Association.] London, February 5. Eight men have been charged with complicity in the Phoenix Park murders, and of these, O'Brien, Brady* and McCafferty have been fully identified as having been seen lurking in the grass near the scene of the murders, The medical evidence shows that the wx>unds on the bodies exactly correspond with those likely to be inflicted by the amputation knives found in a loftshouse" belonging to another of the prisoners, James Carey, a resident in Dublin, and a councillor. The prisoners, who at first laughed at the charge, appeared greatly alarmed. The most intense excitement exists in Dublin owing to the arrests.
