GISBORNE.
' _ This day. Between eight and nine o'clock last night, the Poverty Bay Herald Office was fired by an incendiary, and a portion of the printing office was destroyed, but no damage was done to the type or machinery. Bain was falling heavily at the time, and consequently few people were about. Water was carried by a number of willing bands, who. came upon the scene at the sound of the firebell. The same spot where the fire was discovered last night is the one which was set fire to.a year ago. The block in which the Herald office is situate includes the MasonicH< tel, Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.'s office, Mrs A. M. Browne's Fancy Repository, Nolan and Dufaur's offices, and Carl&w,* Smith and Co.'s auction mart. Had the incendiary deferred his work for a couple of hours later, it must have resulted in a great conflagration. The room used by the editor had also been set fire to, but the fire appears to have'gone out.
