The steamship Cambria was bound from Hamburg to New York. There were 490 souls on board when she sailed. Up to the present time only 56 have been saved and the worst ivfeared as to the fate of the remainder. New Yojrk, January 21. Intelligence is to hand of a serious railway accident on the overland line between' San FraucisoW and Omaha. The train bound for the former place slipped, while ascending a steep gradient, and rolled over the embankment. The engine and all the carriages were shattered to pieces. So far as at present is known, twenty passengers have been killed and a number of others are seriously injured. Beblin, January 21. The death is announced to-day of Prince Frederick Charles, brother of the Emperor William of Prussia, born 1801. Pabis, January 20. Eeports were current yesterday re* garding the alleged widespread Legitimist plot under the leadership of Charletfe. It has been generally pooh-poohed by the French Press, and received little credence. No arrests have been made. London, January 20. News has been received here from Hamburg that the Hamburg-American Company's steamship Cambria has been lost in the North Sea, having sunk after a collision with another vessel. Thirty-nine passengers and crew reached Cuxhaven,at the mouth of the Kibe, in the ship's boats. The Marquis of Hartington, M.P. for north-east Lancashire, and Secretary of State for War, in the eourso of a speech at Manchester last night, stated that the present Government would never grant law-making autonomy to Ireland, although it was proposed to grant to the Irish people a certain measure of self-govern^ ment. , At an address delivered at Blackburn, Lord Hnrtington announced that the evacuation of "Egypt by British forces would take place as soon as a stable Government had been established, and added that the action of the British Government had received the approval of most of the European Powers.
The "total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,280,000 quarters, 20,000 less than last week. Best selected transparent kauri gum is quoted at £12 10s, an advance of 7s 6d Der cwt.
