The False Prophet Causes Trouble.
Intelligence is to . hand, from the Spudan that an engagement has been fought between a battalion of Egyptian troops and the rebels under El Mabdi, the false prophet. The latter were vic> torious, and inflicted a severe defeat on the troops, a whole battalion of the latter being virtually destroyed, fully one half being killed, and the rest placed hors de combat. Received January 19, 2.50 p.m. London, January 18. Canon Wilkinson has accepted the See of Truro, vacant by the appointment of %Dr Benson to the Primacy. Archdeacon Lewis has boen appointed Bishop of Llandaffin the room of the late Dr Ollivant.
Intelligence has been received that the Eight Hon. W. E. Gladstone reached Cannes. He has accomplished the journey without undue fatigue, and bis health is in a more satisfactory state.
