OUR MINES.
. DEEP LEY XL CROSS. * A further parcel of lOlbs of stone was bagged on Saturday night -from the reef in the, west, drive at No, 4 le^el. ; This makes the total bagged beyondJthe small break 75lbs. As the manager can only! obtain 5 head of stamps 'l 'it-title Alburnia j milirhe^hlrsTlecided-to^topcrushingthere.r! and will commence with 10 head at the Moanatairi mill to-morrow morning. ,;As soon, as the stamps are free,* however, \ 20 head will be employed. The cleaning up at the Alburnia mill will not take place for two pr three days, there being a considerable'amount of quartz on hand. The reef in the face of the drive is fully 6 feet wide, carrying a defined hanging and foot ' wall. lis course, instead of being east and west, is almost north and south, so it is probably identical with the cross reef at No. 3 level. It ia composed of good\ looking quartz, well mineralised, and shows colors of gold pretty freely when broken." A horse'of mullock, mixed with* quartz, fa showing in the face. The dis tonoe d>iven past the break is only about 6 feet,' and the foot wall portion of the lode, in which the gold was got on Saturday, was not broken down to dajr There is no sign of the reef carrying back towards the Imperial ground, but it has no doubt been heaved by the break, and should be picked up in* the hangingwall of the No, 2 reef. ..j. ■;■ CALEDONIAN. The manager has obtained a plan showing the position of the Red Queen old workings, and as soon as a survey has been made of his crosscut, he will drive
ap to them, so as to improve the rentilation. Driving was started both ways this morningon the cross reef lately intersected? A little work was done on it last week, and the quartz showed gold pretty freely when broken. The stopes on No. l'reef above No, 1 level, and on the footwall specimen leader above.No. 2 level, continue to pro-, duce payable quartz, in which, colors of gold are. seen. The old drive on No. 1 reef at No. 1 level has been cleaned out and timbered up to solid country, and a nice looking reef about 14 inches wide is showing in the face; "Work was started npon this to day. Crushing will probably be started at the Herald mill next'week. QUEEN OF,BEAUTY. ... The manager today banked 89?jozs retorted gold. The battery is now idle, and, likely to remain so till we have more rain.; On account of this some of the then havebeen discharged, as the manager has nolf room to stow the quartz Sloping on the 1 reef above No. 7 will be kept up &£ long as possible. The quartz from herd yielded about lOdwts per ton. The shafil has been sunk 12ft during the pasj fortnight. " >" • " ' < MOANATAIRI. '\ The manager reports for last week as follows:—" Tunnel level: Siuce my last a little picked stone has come to hand from drive west of winze below tunnel level! The reef is not more than six inches wide in face of drive, but it appears to be opening out ahead.; As progress here is very slow, having 'io haul ererything, and as there is a very large and kindly block of ground to be proved in this quarteir above and below 80ft level, I purpose, if it meets with your approval, to commence a crosscut at 80ft level middle of next week, the commencement of the fortnfght. We shall have to drive about 80ft beforjs reaching No. 2 reef. This work would be done by contract. The country through which Ihe, .crosscut should be drivefi wduld not be very expensive. We have •discovered the leader corresponding to the one worked by the Don Pedro tributers. It is Bin in- thickness, l but nqt quite defined yet. The country is good for gold. JSonpare.il, 215 ft level: Thje face of drive is 70ft from shaft. Here we have old; workings, but;~it contains a good deal of quartz just now, some of which shows strong colors of gold. Morning Star section: The new crosscut between the 50ft and 115 ft levels has been ex tended about 70ft from shaft. 35ft of the latter portion of crosscut have gone through a series of leaders and stringers, varying in width from 3in to i of an inch. Most of these carry a little gold. The battery will start on Tuesday. 25 head will be employed on Deep Level Cro^s and tributers 1 stuff; the remainder of company's.—J.G. Vivian." ;" : i NEW EUREKA. (OTUNUI). \ The following report was read at a directors'meeting to-day: —"I-b'ave the honor to report to you the work done during the past week. I have risen on the eastern end high enough, and will^start stoping on Monday. We obtained a little gold all the way up. In the drive going west the blue hangingwall leader has come in again, and is now a strong body of well mineralised quartz fully 18 inches, thick, showing : numerous colors of gold, and I hope to come on something good as we drive on." BULL'S BATTERY. Steam having been got up, crushing was started at the above battery thismorning, and ifß>jfullMpower is now employed reducing quarlz from the Adelaide claim. ]
