The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1883.

Considebble dissatisfaction seems to exist amongst rolunteers in connection with new regulations. We see by telegrams from Auckland and Wellington three companies have resolved to disband rather than reform the corps under the regulations. When they were first published, Yarioue doubts were expressed as to the success likely to attend their carrying out, and now it appears tolerably bonclimTe that they will hare to be altered, if the Government is at all desirous to retain the services of Volunteers of many years standing, who are well drilled, and in most cases " thoroughly up " in all the requirements of the service. There was not the least doubt that when the reorganisation - board was appointed, reforms in Volunteer matters were very urgently needed, but it was a generally expressed opinion that those .appointed to make the recommendations were not men suited for performing such a task. In disbanding the various corps—this is of course necessary before a reform could take place—the Government make no provision for recouping members of companies who have spent considerable amounts in uniforms and other things. In many instances uniforms have not many months ago been ordered from England. The peculiar manner in which the reduction of the strength of the whole force was gone about was on a par with most of the recommendations of that wonderful board. In the Thames the strength of the corps was reduced from 708 to 378, or by. nearly one half, while in Nelson the reduction was only from 306 to 305. We shall on a future occasion deal with this question in a more exhaustive manner.
