Interest Raised
The associated banks have raised the rate of interest on deposits by 1 per cent., but the lending rates are unchanged. Yesterday. Performance of the "Messiah."
The oratorio- of the "Messiah" was performed at the Choral Festival last night, and was a great success. The audience numbered fully 8000 persons, and the band and chorus 1400.

Telegrams to hand from Clarence Hirer Heads report that the screw steamer New England, 3600 tons, struck on the bar at the entrance to the river and has become
a total wreck. The mojority of the passen gers and crew were safely landed, but some were left clinging to the wreck, which is in a critical position, and likely to break up. The sea is rising on the bar. Sydney, This day.
The latest telegrams from the Clarence report that six persons have been drowned through the wreck of the steamship New England ; seven still remain on the vessel. 28 have been rescued, but it is supposed that there are tv. elve others unaccounted for. A terrific sea is running at the Heads, and the position of those still on the vessel is most critical. The catastrophe has caused great consternation at the Clarence.

VICTORIA, v. NEW SOOTH WALES.
Meibouene, December 27
The cricket match between Victoria and New South Wales Elevens was resumed to day, when the visitors continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 247. The highest scores were: —A, Bannerman, 78; W, L. Murdoch, 71; and Spofforth, 31. The Home team at the conclusion of the day's play had scored 332 runs with 4 wickets yet to fail The principal scores were, Horan 120, and Midwinter 38. Great interest was taken in the match, and arrangements have been made to play it out.
This day. In the international cricket match yesterday McDonnell, for the Victorian, scored 70. ENGLAND y. BALLARAT. A cricket match was commenced yesterday at Ballarat, between Bligh's English eleven and a team representing Ballarat and district. The Home team went in first, and were all disposed of for a total of 226. The match was continued to-day, and when the stumps were drawn the visitors had scored 26.9, for the loss of 9 wickets.
