A Vessel's Crew Eaten.
Intelligence has b?aa received here that the crew of a vessel, sixteen in al!, have been killed and c ten by the natives of New Guinea. A life buoy, with the name Pavione on it, was found near the scene of the massacre, but the vessel's name is uncertain, as no (race of her was left.

New South Wales Election
The election of a member for the Legislative Assembly for Illawarra took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Start by a large majority.
The Hon. J. Watson, Colonial Treasurer, and Dr Renwick, who were recently defeated at the elections for Young and Ea^t Sydney constituencies respectively, were again rejected. ■ The crici-efc ncatch between the English Eleven and a local team was continued at Newcastle to-day. The first innings of the visitors closed for 21^, and at the conclusion of today's play the Home team, in their second innings, had lost one wicket for 25 runs.
Melbourne, Saturday. Abolition of Government Patronage.
At a meeting at which fully five hundred persons were present, held at the Town Hall last evening, a resolution was uuanimously passed requiring the abolition or patronage in appointments made to the Government Department.
Allocating the Blame
The general-traffic manager of the Victorian railway (Mr J. Anderson) has issued a report regarding the Hawthorne railway collision, in which he blames the driver and guard of tue express tram for the catftitrophe.
