London, Dec. 8, "Wool Sales.

The wool sales have closed. 120,000 bales were sold during the series, and 17,000 bales are held over for next auction. The sales terminated with a good competition and with prices firmly maintained.

Tiio Groat Fire

It has been ascertained that the damage resulting from Wood street fire is not so great as was at first thought. The loss is not expected to exceed one million sterling. The premises of Rylands and Sons, L.D., Manchester, warehousemen, Sargood, Son and Co., warehousemen, Silber ?nd FlemiDg, warehousemen and manufacturers, hare been completely burned down. The other premises in the

block are not totally destroyed, but have suffered serious damage.

A Liberal Victory.

The election for the vacancy in the representation of Liverpool in the Houce of Commons took place to-day, aid resulted in the return of Mr Smithy a Literal, by a majority of 370 over Mr Forwpci, the Conservative candidate.

Pabis, December 9 The French and Tonquin.

In the Chamber of Deputies to day, M. Duclerc, the Premier, stated, with reference to the proposed establishment of a French protectorate over Tonquin, that a sum of nine million franc? would be required to carry out the project, and announced that he would shortly ask the Chamber to authorke the appropriation of that sum to deiray the expense! in connection with the expedition.
