Te Aroha Tramway.
At the laßt meeting of tbePiako Counfy Council, held on Wednesday, tenders for the formation-contract of the tramway up Waiorongomai Creek were opened, and ranged from £7091 to £10,937, the accepted"tenderers being Messrs J. Darrow and Foughey. After some discussion, it was resolved to considerably amend the works to be done at present, and accept a tender for only, a portion, amounting to •bout £5250, on the schedule rates, and Messrs Darrow and Poughoy were the. successful tenderers. The portion to be gone on with is,|of course, the most important, and omits the upper sections, which may be undertaken when the work now let has been completed. The great object has been to save time, and bring the work within the resources arailable. The accepted, tender omits the main line from its intersection with Bntler's spur incline northwards, and the upper self-acting line. Under the original scheme, a horse-grade was to be mfj3& from the head of the upper selfacting line northwards to the Waiorongomai, below the Premier, and southwards to the Diamond. Gully. This is now done away with, and, in its stead, the horse grade from the head of Butler's spur self acting incline, in place of terminating at Diamond ([jioUy, is to be continued to the "Vyaiorongomai. This grade, being more than 300. feet lower than the grade which has been done away with, will give considerably more work to the claims to the * nor th of Diamond Gully requiring connection, but will reliere the Council from the necessity of some £4000 to £5000 additional expenditure. It is thought that the Counoil bare aoted wiselj in re« dueine the plan to this extent in order to eet the work off hand cheaper and more expeditiopsly.—Te Areha Mail.
