Madagascar.
In the House of Commons to-day, Sir Charles Dilke, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in reply to a question, stated that diplomatic communications are now passing between the English and French Governments regarding the De Brazzes' treaty, under which France ac* quires certain territory in Madagascar. Distress in Ireland. Mr G. O. Trevelyan, Chief Secretary for Ireland, stated, in reply to a question, that Government are of opinion that the Unions are quite adequate to cope with, the distress now prevailing in Ireland.

Archbishop of Canterbury.
Dr Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, who has been in failing health for some time past, suffered a relapse, and bis condition is now serious. Russia and Germany. A semiofficial statement from Berlin announce? that M. Giers, Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, is about to visit Prince Bismarck and Emperor William. The visit is said to be for the purpose of cementing the friendship of the. Empires, and has no special objects.
