DUNEDIN.

Yesterday.

The Laud Board met to day to determine on the division of the 43 runs to be sold in February next year. The great bulk of the runs were agreed to be released, some for seven, some for ten, some for fourteen, and some for twenty-one years; and the upset rental was fixed at from Id up to as much as Si. per acre. One run that ia now leased by Messrs Oar^ill and Anderson, at Roxburgh, con-

♦a;ni'nor 32 000 ceres, was entirely reserved for settlement; as was also a portion of one »t the head of Lake Wakatipu, and Messrs Smith and Gellibrand's Moun* Stokes' run, containing 18,500 acres. There was a discussion at the Episcopaliau Synod on the motiou affirming the desirability of a school for girls being established in connection with the Church of England. The Rev. Mr Byng stated that his special reason for bringing the motion forward was that the practice of sending girls to Catholic Convent schools, as is so largely followed in Dunedin, might be obviated. It was stated that some twelve cases were known in which girls had been proselytised to Roman Catho licism whilst attending these schools. All the speakers concurred in the opinion that influence, direct or indirect, must be exercised towards proselytising in- such schools according to the well known tenet* of the Roman Catholic Church. The motion was carried and a committee appointed to take steps to carry it out. A motion was also carried affirming the desirability of doing away with the ten shilling fee for performing the marriage cereTaonv.
