OUR MINES.

CALEDONIAN.

, The specimen leaders in the drive recently cleaned out at.No. 2 level continue to look exceedingly well, and good' dabs i and blotches of gold are showing in the ! roof of the drive for a length of 10ft. Fine i dabs of gold arc also showing in the same ! leaders from the bottom of the prospectiug winze. This winze is now down 25ft, but judging from the underlay of the leaders I and the No. 2 reef they will not junction till some distance below the present workings. It is therefore the intention of the manager to sink the winze a depth of about 50ft, or half way to No. 3, and open out an intermediate level from the shaft. This will give backs of about (50 or 70ft, and the block should prove a very I remunerative one. The ground opened I up is all new, so there is also a good \ chance of payable quartz being met with in either No. 1 or 2 reef. Another fact which, enhances the value of the prei sent discovery is that it is situated right under the old shot of gold. Should tli9 gold continue below the intermediate level, the winze could easily be sunk to No. 3, and a fresh block opened up from there. The work of cleaning out the old drive on the footwall of, No. 1 reef in the Otago section is nearly completed, and' the manager intends shortly to take out a trial crushing from the reef where the old drive was broken into by the drive from the top of Capt. Richards' rise. The body of quartz here is about 10ft thick, and easy to J work, so if it proves payable a large amount of crushing dirt will be available. BRIGHT SMILE. The leader in the stopes was broken down yesterday, and a haul of about 35lbs of nice picked stone bagged.
