AUSTRALIAN.

Sydney, Yesterday. The whole of the Garden Palace was completely destroyed this morning, within an hour after the commencement of the fire. A few portions of the brickwork are all that now remains standing. There waa no insurance upon the building or upon its contents, except the art collection. The loss is incalculable on account ot.the great destruction of Government documents, many of which cannot be replaced. All the papers relating to the last census, and the planb and records of railway surveys, have perished in the flames, and collections in the Technological. Museum, will be diffiouit to replace. The flames spread with great rapidity, •and rose to an immense height, being visible for miles around. The origin of the fire is entirely unknown, but it is hinted that it is due to incendiarism. The art collection in the Garden Palace was insured for £3000. This, as already stated, was the only insurance on the building or its contents. Melbourne, Yesteday. Messrs C.S. Ross and Co., of this city,

report having sold the cargo of kauri timber s ex Kobin Hood, at the following average prices per ICO feet: Super sawn boards (1 inch), 225; dressed boards (f inch), 23s per 100 feet lineal;'T. and G. flooring (6f inch), 9s 9d; ditto 4 x 1% inch, 8s 9d. A report is current here this evening that O'Farrell, who was recently sentenced to two years' imprisonment in Melbourne Gaol, for his attack upon Archbishop Gould, has attempted to commit suicide. Brisbane, Yesterday. The steamship Ganges, from Melbourne to Calcutta, with a cargo of horses, has been wrecked on the coast near here. No lives were lost.
