We have it on most reliable authority (says the Charleston Herald) that Mr A. E. Guinness, counsel for the appellant in the late Appeal case Blanc v. Lander, actually returned a portion of his fee to his client when the appeal was upset. Such unheard-of generosity on the part of a member of the legal profession has seldom, if ever, been recorded. The uncommon occurrence, we are given to understand, has created quite a panic amongst the local, practitioners. It is asserted by- a Wanganui paper, that a membnr of the legal profession recently averred that his " earnings " in connection with the Native Land Court were at the rate of £700 in a fortnight. No wonder the pro. would like to exclude Bill, Jack, Dick, Tom, or Harry from its ranks. In a township up the Darling Eivei there it a lively, young Irish doctor. Bertie Campbell, ttie squattor, drove him to the station to prescribe for his sick overseer. Going through a mob of cattle, said the doctor,. "By George! that's an old fellow," pointing to the bullock. " What the mischief do you know about the age of bullocks ?," retorted the owner. " Sure, there's the brand on him," said the doctor, " B.C. 77." A telegram to an AmericaD paper, dated Alexandria, 27th June, contains the following significant announcement: — "Arabi Pasha states that if the Porte abandons him he will publish correspondence proving that every step he has taken since the 7th of September last was instigated by the Porte."
