OUR MINES.

QUEEN OF BEAUTY.

The pumps were stopped all day yesterday to allow of a new covering being placed on the turbine, bat a start wag made early this morning at a speed of 8 doable or 16 single strokes per minute. At thig speed, the pump, is forking just double the quantity of water it was when only steam power was doing the work, and as eren then the water was kept at a standstill, it should not take long before the bottom lerel is dry. As was expected, the water rose considerably during the stoppage yesterday. The new covering I

on the turbine is a substantial one, being made of J inch plate iron, rivetted and bolted together, and looks much better * than the old one. The manager to-day banked 140ozs 6dwts gold, the return for the recent crushing. A previous parcel of 1340zs lOdwts has been banked, makiog a total of 2740zs 16dwtB gold from about 170 loads ot quartz—a very good average. KUKANUI HTLL. ~ The manager has started to rise on the leader Dabb and party are working in the Oddfellows' section. From the point I at which operations have been commenced a block ICO feet in height can be obtained. The leader is small at present, about 3 inches in width. Mr Crawford will not rise the whole distance, but will carry up a stope with the rise in order to *get> air. The manager reports:— M Junction: Work has been carried on as usual on the footwall leader, and although gold is occasionally seen in breaking down, and the stone looks likely enough, it ig not shaping very grand at the battery. I expect the leader to improve ag the stones extend upwards. All Nations: Work has also been continued in this block, and as the quartz is easily obtained, I am keeping four men employed here in order to beat out the block and give me an opportunity of starting on the Inverness leader, which I am of opinion will pay well for working. Albion crosscut: The drive on the No. 1 leader is now in over 240 ft, or half way to the All Nations shaft, and as we are gradually approaching the run of country which gave such good returns in the levels above, I have great h>pes of rich gold continuing downwards,. Two tuen have been driving on the first leader, out in the crosscut, and I am having the quartz sent up to the surface for a trial crushing. Oddfellows : I have had two men clearing and making ready for rising on this leader and will be in full swing next week. Battery: Crushing is being proceeded with both for tributers and the company. We hare still a considerable amount of quartz on hand (mostly low grade) and I do not expect to finish crushing much before the end of the month;—T. H. Cbawfobd." GOLD RETURNS. Wheel of Fortune (Tairua).—The manager to-day banked llozs 4dwts gold. Kueanui Hill—Artha and party have treated 6 tons for 2}zs 6dwts gold.
