! The following is Col. Header's volunteer j report. The report showa an increase, the North Island of 635, and in the South ' Island of 134 volunteers. la October last | when it was decided to advance <& Pa^'« haka, the districts of Auckland, Nelson, Marlborough, Wellington, and Canter- | bury, were called upon for active service on the West Coast, and in answer to the call the Thames sent 7 officers and 164 men; Nelson, 13 officers and 176 men; Marlborough, 3 officers and 49 men: Wellington, 21 officers and 283 men: Canterbury, 5 officers and 74 men, which, together with the volunteers furnished by the Taranaki and Wanganui districts gave a valuable contingent of 64 officers and 1048 men. The total number of volunteers on the 31st December, 1881, the close of the volunteers financial year, was 8318 adults, and 1976 cadets, of whom 6216 adults and 1464 cadets qualified for capitation. The return of small arms and ammunition, rifles, &c, m store, and on issue:—Sniderg (all sizes) on issue 8184, in store 2997; Enfield, in store, 10,553; on issue, 914; ammunition, Snider, in store, 1,206,213; Enfield in store, 429,127; Cadet arms—Carbines, muzzle loaders, on issue, 477; muzzle loaders, in store, 323; Terry's, on issue, 651; Terry's, in store, 326; ammunition, muzzle loader (Enfield ammunition used). There are in the colony 17 Armstrong guns, 140 pounder, 6 12-pounders, and 10 6 pounders, 10 24-pounders. Howitzer'i —11 7«ton guns, 11 64-pounder gun*, 11 14-mortars, 15 iron various guns.
