COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following reports were read at the meeting of the Connfy Council, held this afternoon :— > eng-ineee's bepobt. Hasting* Riding : During the month of Jane, an average of three men hays been employed on theTapu road, cleaning slips and maintaining same in .passable condition. Many parts of the road,are still in Very bad condition. The storm ot Saturday last has . done considerable damage to the road, and the number of men employed is not sufficient to tnairi< tain the road in good condition. On the Tapu to Waikawau road men ha'ra- been employed clearing away slips. .Waiotahi • Riding: In the Waiotahi riding an average of three men have been employed during the past month repairing the roads on the Moanatairi and Waiotahi creeks. The upper part of the Waiotahi road is still in very bad condition, and the number of men employed are unable to .do'the work required. The foot-bridge near the Nonpareil tip has been repaired, ,, but a portion of the footpath near tb^ upper end of the bridge is liable to slip v at any moment. Should this slip take place, I would recommend that the footpath be made on the solid and the bridge removed. The dams authorised at the
last meeting of the Council have not yet > been put in, and I would recommend that be constructed by day labor during JuJf. . Hauaeranga Riding: An' average of , two men have been employed during the past month in repairing roads and footpaths, and in cleaning water-tables and culverts. I have, in accordance with instructions from the Council, taken over the metal broken by Messrs Ensor and Farrell, at the rate of 7s per cubic yard. Bepairs have been effected on roads in Karaka Creek, Te Papa Gully. Richmond and Sandes streets, and also at the
approaches to the bridges across the Hape Creek, in Rolleston street, and Cemetery road.
: Parawai Riding: An average of two men have been employed in this riding during the month, and repairs have been effected on the Cemetery road and Bo wen street.
Totara. Riding: On the Kauaeranga Valley road one man has been employed during a portion of the month, and during the present month the worst portions of this road will be repaired and improved. On the Ohinemuri main road an average of three men have been employed during the month, but many parts of this road are in very bad condition. Ohinemuri Riding,: On the Xatikati road four men bave been employed during the month, but the road is now nearly impassable in places. 'On the Te Aroha road one man has been employed during the month. The contract for filling the swamp on this road is not being proceeded with in n satisfactory manner, and there is no possibility of the contractor completing the work within the specified lime.— Aiex. Aitken, County Surveyor. BEPOET ON WATER BACE.
- The following is the County Surveyor's report on the water-race: —" Gentlemen, —I the honor to report that the Thames water-race is in very fair order and condition, and has been running full during the month. The contractor has been engaged during -the month inrepairing all unsound portions of the! timber work, and has used up a considerable amount of timber in so doing. More of this work still remains to be done. The contractor is using every endeavor j to carry out his contract in accordance■] with the specification. —Aiex. Aitken,^ County Surveyor." BEPOBT OF TBE BOABD OP "WOBKS. Your Board' have the honor to recommend that men be employed during the current month in the ridingas follows :— In the Hastings riding four men; in the Waiotahi three men; in the Kauaeranga three men ; in the Parawai two men ; in the Totara three men; in the Ohinemuri four men. BEPOBT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE. Your Committee have the honor to make the following recommendations:— 1. That Dr Payne's account be referred to the Charitable Aid Committee to examine and report on at the next meeting of the Council. 2. That Mr W. Carpenter's offer to liquidate the {balance due from the Thames Produce Company on account sales of iron be accepted, 3. That no account for travelling expenses by committee men and others, under the Licensing Act be acknowledged, unless accom» panied by receipts in payment of the items claimed.
