The agent of the P. and O. Steamship Company, at Suez, telegraphs, with reference to the preparations which it is alleged have been made by the Egyptians for rendering the Suez Canal iaipassabie, that no danger is at the present time anticipated for steamers using that route. A cargo of hewn kauri timber, ex ship Alcestis, from Whangaroa, was sold at auction to-day, and realised 19s 9d per thousand feet.
Sydney, Friday.
At a meeting of the coal miners on strike at Newcastle today, delegates were appointed, and authorised to sign a bond for the selection of arbitrators to finally determine their disagreement with the colliery manager.
