[aDVBBTISEMBHT.] Sill,— It has come to my knowledge, . by means of reliable witnesses, that Martin Henry Payne, Surgeon, calling himself Dr Payne, has been, and is, in, the habit of saying that my name is not J-^on the English Medical Register, in order 'to deceive persons unacquainted with the 'subject into the belief that I do not possess the diplomas and qualifications, which'l hold, and; for which my name appears on the Medical Register of New Zealand, namely, Bachelor of Medicine and Master in Surgery, which are the highist degrees now conferred by examinaten. The reason that my name has not hitherto appeared on the English Register is simply that I did not pay the registration fee, because it was not my intention to practice permanently in England, and *s my medical education was a very expensive one, haviDg cost close on £200 J, I did not, after passing, feel justified in a further expenditure which was j»ot necessary. I hare now, however, remitted to London the money re* attired for that purpose, so that tie means employed by Mr Payne to mislead the public regarding my qualifications must be altered and amended in the future. It is said that people who live in glass houses ought not to throw stones. Mr Payne has no claim, either legal or in courtesy, to the title of Doctor, but it is not surprising that he should seek to clothe the poverty of his actual diplomas by an imposing array of letters after his name, for he is nothing more nor less than a London surgeon^one of the lowest qualifications for practice in the United Kingdom at the time he obtained it, as indeed is amply Terified by his professional career, which ' constantly exhibits the educational disadvantages under which he labours. Nor is it likely that he will improve, for Mr Payne is Ba-well satisfied with his skill and ability, and so little aware of his physical and mental defects that he disdains study. Indeed he avows that the only interest in,his profession felt by him is the money which he earns by it. Mr Payne may remember that on March 12th, 1880, while combating another medical man, he wrote to the Stab stating that jmy qualifications were of the highest. -. -, 0. H.
