WAIO-KARAKA SCHOOL.

The pupils of this school with tb«*: parents and friends assembled yesterday afternoon at the school. Mr Newel Phillips addressed them, and said the recent entertainment had been a very successful one, and although 600 scholars had been admitted free, about £16 was raised; After the expenses had been paid they wonld.have a few pounds left to spend on forming the nucleus of a school library, and next year he hoped they would be able to equip it. Mr McGowan, the Chairman, of the school committee, had instructed him to present on his behalf a cheque for three guineas; to W. C. Atkin^ son, the winner of the first district prize, and one of two. guineas to W. H. V. Hall, who carried off the second prize. The cheques were then presented to the recipients by Mr Phillips, and three hearty cheers were given for them. Master Abel Rowe/then stepped forward, and on behalf M the senior scholars read an add rests to Mr Webber, concluding by presenting nraor with two handsome illustrated volumes, as a token of their regard for him. The .^j^umes were the Rev. J. G. Wood's "Ifatural History," and Bret Harte's complete works. Mr Webbr suitably acknowledged the present, after which cheers were given for Messrs McGowan and G. N. Phillips, and also for the teachers. The national anthem was then sung, and the gathering dispersed, the younger scholars being presented with a bag of cakes and lollies.
