Concert at St. Joseph's School.
A concert and drama took place last evening in the above school, Willoughby street, and proved to be a great success financially. The room was crowded to excess. In the. instrumental concerted piece for pianos and /clarionet, " Messenger of Love Waltz," Mr W. Batchelor manipulated the clarionet with bis usual skill, but despite his efforts to keep the ■election in proper waltz time, it was dragged so as to remind one of a funeral dirge. Miss Alice Conroy may undoubtedly be considered as the most successful vocalist of the evening. Her rendering of the well known song "Carissima" was all that could be desired, and evoked the loudest applause from the auditory. She has a most excellent voice, and with care and culture, may some day make a mark in the singing'world for herself. Mrs N. Payne sang," Don't go Mollie Darling," in a highly artistic manner, and in response to an encore*gave "Aileen Alannab," a complaint of a love sick individual in the minor key. ''ITwas a dream," received the utmost justice at the hands of Mrs Thomas Lawless, who however was slightly neivbus. She was vociferously applauded, and in response gave ,*• Thy face is near," for which effort she narrowly escaped another recall. Messrs Haydon and McGregor were eminently ■ucoessful in their comic songs, while the veteran pcet, Mr Wiseman, caused great amusement by his singing " The march on Parihaka." The other young ladies (including Miss O'Grady who sang "The meeting of the waters,") acquitted themselves well both in a vocal and instrumental point of view. The drama "My Aunt's heiress " passed off satisfactorily, and a most enjoyable, entertainment was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
