James, the United States Postmaster* General has resigned, and has been succeeded by Mr Feeliugltussen. Despatches have been published in which Blame, Secretary of State, warns Chili and Peru that the working of any European power will produce more actire intervention on the part of the United States. Blame urges the two countries to come to a settlement without any cession of territory on the part of Peru being required.

The funeral of the victims of the recent lire was publicly performed to-day. The ceremony was of a most imposing character, and was witnessed by many thousands of people. \ '
