Statistics of New Zealand.
From the official statistics of New Zealand for the year 1880 just published, we gain a fund of information. Regarding the population in 1880, there was an increase of 21,135, the principal cause being the large excess of births over deaths. The following table will show the population in each prorincial district :-—
The above table shows an increase in population equal to 4.5 per cent. With regard to marriages, we find that the altar of Hymen has not been so extensively patronised in 1880 as in 1879, there being a decrease of 170 in the number ot people who threw off single misery for wedded bliss. The proportion of marriages to the population was 671 for every thousand. The Church of England heads the list with 679 ; then follows the Registry Office, 653; Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, 486; Roman Catholic, 412. Other denominations contributed in smaller numbers. With regard to the age of persons married, there was one loving couple aged 70 and 60 respectively, while the youngest on record during the year was when a valiant youth of 20 summers espoused a young lady who had not entered her teens. The large majority of marriages was between persons of the age of 25 and 30, two-thirds of the total marriages solemnised being between persons of .that age. With regard to imports and exports, we find that in 1880 the colony of New Zealand imported goods to the extent of £6,162,011, and exported £6,352,692, of which £3,479,217 came from the United Kingdom, and £4,767,068 was exported thereto.
