DUNEDIN.
Thisday. Mr McLean, M-H.R-, Retires
through 111-health.
George McLean addressed his constituents at Waikouaiti last night. He reviewed the last session, and declared it had not been a barren one. He regretted the omission of the Leasehold Qualification in the Electoral Bill, and did not think the North had any reason to fear the increased representation given to the South. He regretted the abandonment of the Government pre-emptive right. In regard to purchase of native lands, he warmly supported the present Native policy of the Government. The display of force had probably prevented bloodshed. In conclusion he stated that through ill-health he had determined not to be a candidate for re-election. He had been several times offered a seat in the Council, and it might again be offered him, but he thought he should have to go away on a trip for the benefit of his health. If he did go into the Council it would only be on the understanding that if his health was restored ho would resign, and endeavor to regain his seat for Waikouaiti in the House.—A resolution expressing deep regret at his retirement, and of sympathy with him, and a hope that he would go to the Council so as to be of further service to the colony, together with a wish that he might be restored to health again to enable him to sit for Waikouaiti, was carried unanimously.
