OUR MINES.

CALEDONIAN. The manager reports on the 31sc October:—"l am still continuing the ea9t drive in the dig, No. 1 level. The vein of quartz mentioned in my last has opened out to about 18 inches in width, and still carries colors of gold. I have four or five loads now in the paddock, and shall start crushiug it tomorrow to ascertain its value. I believe it is payable dirt. I have cleaned out that portion of Captain Richards' drive on No. 2 reef and found the rise, which is full of mullock ; hate cleaned down about 20 feet of it, and if everything goes on well, shall see the top of rise by the end of this week. If rumors are correct there should be something there to pay for our trouble. The drive west on small leader has been driven ten feet this past week. The leader is about four inches thick, and in good country, but no gold has been seen in it yet. I have stopped the drive on No. 1 reef towards the Calf; it is very expensive on account of shifting mullock over so often,, especially with not much prospect ahead. I crushed 21 loads at the Herald battery from here for the small yield of 37dwts retorted gold ; this I am leaving stand until the east drive is driven up, so as to bring the mullock direct to shaft.— T. B. Hicks." GOLD RETUBNS. "if^ST Chance.—Young and party, who are tributing in this mine, have crushed seven loads of quartz for the remunerative return of 16ozs 6dwts Tetorted gold
