The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1881.

There may be considerable truth in the statement made that our Governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, intends to visit England next spring, and also in the comments of the Wellington press that he will not return to New Zealand. .JSirArthur Gordon has never identified himself very much with the interests of this colony, and it has long been felt that he was more interested in the progress of Fiji and the islands of the Western Pacific than' he was in the, advancement of New Zealand. Governing a constitutional colony was something new to Sir Arthur Gordon, and although in his first speeches made in the colony, he announced himself well informed on the peculiar duties required from him as such, he failed to impress the colonists with that belief. Greater experience of the man did not improve his position, and only tended to confirm the general impression that a good choice had not been made when he was chosen to govern a colony like New Zealand with a Liberal constitution. Yet in the estimation of the Home Authorities Kir Arthur Gordon is not likely to suffer ; he is a clever man, and has always shown the possession of that worldly wisdom which prevents a man quarrelling with his patrons. So, no matter what opinion may be entertained by the colonists of New Zealand, or the planters of Fiji of the abilities or wisdom of Sir Arthur Gordon, such will not interfere with his advancement in life. We shall not be surprised to hear of some very important appointment being confarred upon the present Governor of New Zealand and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific.
