London, October 6. The Bank of England has today raised its rate of discount to 5 per cent.
The mutton brought per steamship Orient from Australia has realised an average of sixpence per lb at Smithfield market. The condition of the meat was superior to that of previous shipments. Capetown, October 6.
The telegrams received to-day from ! Pretoria announce that the Voiksraad has concluded its consideration of the report of the committee appointed to decide upon the ratification or rejection of the Transvaal Convention, and it has further transpired Unit in accordance with the orders of the Voiksraad President Krugen has telegraphed to the Imperial authorities in London that it has been decided that tbe Convention is contrary to the spirit of the Land Itiver treaty. A protest is moreover made against the provisions of the revival of the clauses of Convention, and their modification is requested.
