The railway strikers have agreed to lay their case before Mr Maxwell, general manager, who arrived to-day.
During the . practice of the Kaiapoi Factory's fire brigade, some experiments were being made with the new appliances for fire extinction. A heap of wood was pilled up, and to make it burn readily, one of the men poured some gasoline on it, and retired a few paces, lie struck a match to throw it in, when vapour of the oil reached him where he stood, and immediately the match ignited an explosion occurred, and the man was very badly burned, and had to be carried home for attendance.
Fifteen more recruits were sworn in today, and eleven at Lyttelton. A parade of 145 men was held to day, and another will be held to-morrow morning. Mrs Waiter Hill and her two youngest daughters left for Melbourne to day. The two Marshalls are passengers by the same boat. They do not play bere.
