HAWERA.
This day. Crowded public meetings have been held at Manaia and Hawera to enroll Volunteer corps in case of disturbance. 63 were enrolled iv Hawera as Infantry. 30 Mounted Eifles and 38 Foot Rifles were enrolled at Manaia last night. At Manaia Major Staff was present, and the meeting received him heartily, and showed great confidence in him as the officer commanding the district. A number of other Volunteers have expressed an infceution of joining who were not present.
At the meeting at Mauaia it is expected that at least 50 Mounted and probably 100 Infantry will join. On the Plains a uuniber are waiting to see whether Te Whiti really means fighting, as new settlers are too busy to spare time for
soldiering except at serious inconvenience and loss.V A few settlers have removed their, wives and families into the township of Manaia and elsewhere. The air is f.ill of rumours.
