NEW PLYMOUTH.
Yesterday.
The settlers who hare recently commenced the work of making homesteads for themselves at Ngaktfmikumi have determined to bring their families to Neve Plymouth for the present, until native affairs are more settled. The Burgess family left on Saturday, and Campbell is making preparations to remove in a few days.
On Thursday last a settler named Daniels, who had purchased land at the recent land sales, was clearing the road on his land, when a native came upon him and told him to desist. He immediately sprang upon the native, and took an axe from him, and in the struggle that ensued he gave the Maori a blow on the head, which caused the latter to cry out. A number of natives had been hiding in the bush, and they rushed out on Daniels, but did not succeed in catching him, as he is a young, active man, and fleet footed, and he outstripped his pursuers, who followed him close to the camp. On arrival at the camp he informed Colonel Roberts of the affair. Daniels has returned to Few Plymouth, as he docs not consider it safe to settle on his land. This day. The Hinemoa anchored in the roadstead this morning, from the Manukau. She brings arou and ammunition. Matters Looking Serious. Titokowaru and his people, numbering about two hundred in all, left their settlement at Mawhitinokiti, and proceeded to Parihaka. They carried with them all their goods and chattels. They burned down some of their whares before leaving. They are well supplied with axes, fern hooks, &c, having purchased a consider* able number of these implements lately. A native at Parihaka has warned the Constabulary that they intend shortly to proceed to Waimate Plains for the purpose of molesting ■ the settlers there. They intend to commence ploughing there.-
