THAMES RIFLE RANGERS.
The monthly inspection of this old S&ortland Company eventuated last Evening at their Hall, Shortiand, and as usual there was a good muster-Captain Douglas and Lieut. Etching, with a lullcomplement of non commissioned officers, and 50 odd io the ranks. Major Withers wasreceivedwith the customary salute, and proceeded to make a minute iusp- etion of the corps'arms and accoutrements, after which he paid a high compliment to the corps and said as usual with the Hangers, be must certainly express his pleasure at their smart and soldier-like appearance, and the excellent condition of arms and accoutrements.. He further said he must also congratulate them on the very good muster, though he was assured that the change from the accustome day was somewhat against a large parade, still he must say that the Hangers almost invariably mustered very well. Major Withers then, at the request of Captain Douglas, proceeded to invest Corporal Buckley with the, Manning Champion Belt and first prize, aDd Sergt. Gibbs with second prize; also Vol. Ingle 3 was presented with fir* t.prize iv the 2nd class, and Vol. Redwood with second prize in that class. The Major accompanied each prize with a few well chosen remarks as to the value and importance of good shooting. The Captain then announced that the first competition for the "now celebrated Andrews Challenge Cup " would take place on the first Monday next month, and would be fired for monthly until won. Six working and one honorary member (J. Hanuah, Esq., of Auckland) were then elected. This old corps is to be congratulated upon the new life which it now exhibits. ,
