Summary of the Week.
Mining matters have been pretty lively: durine; the past week, and quite a number of sales in shares have been effected by our local brokers, and at very good prices, too. The local mine which has attracted most attention is the- New Golden Crown. This mine is now well opened up, and a very large quantity of payable quartz is easily obtainable. The reef has improved lately, and a good deal of picked stone and specimens have come to hand, while good prospects are left in the face. The Alburnia and New Worth Devon have also attracted attention, the former especially so by the discovery of good gold in the Success reef, which hitherto has scarcely been touched right through the mine, and, therefore, if it will pay to do so, au immense quantity of quartz is yet to be taken from it. The latter mine has also improved greatly since the last crushing,, and the manager telegraphed to-day that the quartz now dt the battery was expected to give a return of about 502s per load. In the Whau mine gold continues to be seen at the 160 feet level, but as only about -18 inches of the reef is being saved, it will take some time to accumulate enough quartz for a crushing. Faith iv the Caledonian mine,>to judge from the price of shares, in on the wane, but we fail to see why this should be so, as the reef looks quite as well, if not better, than when the gold was first seen in it. During this week the manager has been stripping the reef, and it will be broken it)to next week, and a large quantity of quartz taken out before crushing is again resumed. The stone contiuues to show oolors of "gold. Gold is also seen in the No. 1 reef at No. 2 level. The reef is about 4 feet thick here, and a trial parcel will shortly be sent to the battery for treatment. Some nice stone has been got from the Old Golden Calf during the last two or three days, and a good yield is expected at the end of the month. The other mines do not seem to be doing much, and in one of them, the Moanatairi, a new system of working the miue is to be tried. This system is not very highly spoken of, it being the opinion of some that the directors are trying to "best " the men.', ,
