TAURNGA.

This day.

A crowded public meeting was held in the Temperance Hall last nighty convened by Mr G.V.Stewart, Chairman Tauranga Council, when to the following effect- were' urianimpusly adopted :—(l) "That as the closing of the port of Tauranga has proved to be very seriously detrimental to the interests of that town and district, this meeting most emphatically urges the Government to ! re-open that port without any delay, and declares that no increased expenditure will be thereby entailed." (2) "That [ this meeting calls upon the Government to give effect at once to the requisition signed by the Te Puke settlers and other* as embodied in the petition of George Vesey Stewart, Esq., and which petition was presented by that gentleman to the House of Representatives, and strongly recommended by the Parliamentary Waste Lands Committee to the favorable consideration of the Government." (3) |" That, taking into consideration the importance of connecting the Lake District by rail with Tauranga, and that it is j proposed to form a company for this! | purpose, the meeting begs respectfully to . urge upon the Government the necessity of affording every facility of acquiring the lands adjoining the proposed railway for the purposes of railway construction and settlement." (4) " That a Committee of members of County Council and Town Boards, with power to add to number, be j formed to carry out the foregoing resolu-1 tions, and to solicit; the co-operation of adjacent landed proprietors." The following resolution was also passed uuani- I tnously:-~" That this meeting fully | recognises the great benefit secured to Tauranga by Mr G. V. Stewart's Special ( Settlements, together with his untiring seal and energy, displayed so often to the advantage of the town and district generally, and accord him our cordial thanks and support."
