PARLIAMENTARY GOSSIP.
[By Telegraph.]
(feom our special coebespqndent.) Wellington, This day.
There is no truth iv the rumor that the Opposition will refuse to grant more than three or six months supplies, with the view forcing an early electiou and an early session. It is considered certain that the supplies will be voted to March 31 as usually, and the House will probably meet in April, or early in May. The Town District Act is likely to be passed without any very material amendment, except that Westland —where there is a multiplicity of small towns, where separate independence as constituted local corporation would afiect present county administration —is to be excepted. The next important amendment is that a requisition praying that the Act shall be brought into operation must be signed by one hundred instead of fifty householders.
The business of the session having now commenced to narrow down in earnest, and as no good can result from extreme opposition to measures that have yet to be laid before Parliament, it is believed that there will be a speedy disposal of the business now before the house. There will doubtless be very little left undone by Saturday night, and consequently we raay reasonably look forward to a dissolution by Thursday week. The further consideration of the Estimates will be entertained this evening. After the Native Bills and the Leasehold Qualification clause of the Representation Bill has been served, the Council will consider the following reason advanced by the Lower House, for disagreeing with the amendments to Pensions Bill:—" The Lower House disagree to amendments made by Honorable Legislative Council in Pensions Bill, 1881, for the following reason— Because the Pensions Bill, 1881, being a money bill, any amendment thereof by the Council is an infringement of the privileges of the House, and we do not deem it necessary to offer any further reason, hoping the above may be sufficient."
